Amnezia VPN and AmneziaWG — and how MeduzaVPN differs

AmneziaWG is a well-known WireGuard variant that people install on their own VPS. Here is how it works, where its limits are, and an alternative — a ready personal server with our own MeduzaVPN ULTRA protocol, with no VPS to rent and nothing to set up by hand.

  • 13protocols on one server
  • 2protocols of our own
  • 0manual setup

What Amnezia VPN and AmneziaWG are

01

Amnezia VPN — an open-source app

AmneziaVPN is a free, open-source app for running your own VPN. The project is built around self-hosting: you rent a server (VPS) from a hosting provider, the app installs a VPN on it, and you connect to your own server. The project also sells ready paid servers.

02

AmneziaWG — a modified WireGuard

AmneziaWG (AWG) is a fork of the WireGuard protocol. Its speed and encryption come from WireGuard, with a changed packet format on top: extra packets before the handshake, altered headers and service-packet sizes.

03

AWG versions: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and newer

The protocol evolves in generations: each new version changes the packet format. The main practical rule is that client and server must support the same version, so both sides have to be updated.

Where a modified WireGuard hits its limits

AmneziaWG does its job well. But every WireGuard-based protocol shares a few limits, and no version removes them.

  • Everything rides on UDP

WireGuard and its forks run over UDP only. If UDP is unstable on your network, the protocol version does not help: the packets simply never reach the server.

  • Changing the address by hand

When you need a new IP, the protocol does not matter. On your own VPS you have to get a new address yourself and hand out the configurations again.

  • The server is your job

Renting the VPS, installing, updating versions on the server and in every app, changing the address — all of it is done by you, in your own time.

Why MeduzaVPN is easier

The same idea — a server for you alone on the PERSONAL plan — but ready to use and with MeduzaVPN's own protocols.

  • Our own protocol, MeduzaVPN ULTRA

It is our own development, not another modified WireGuard. ULTRA is built for a stable, fast connection, and it comes first in the apps: nothing to choose or configure.

  • 13 protocols on one server

ULTRA, MeduzaVPN, WireGuard, VLESS, Xray, Hysteria, Shadowsocks, OpenVPN and more run at the same time. If one works worse on a network, pick another in the same app — no new server and no new setup.

  • A personal server, ready to go

A personal server with its own IP is created automatically after payment. Hosting, installing the protocols and keeping them updated is our job, not yours.

  • Change IP and location in the app

Need a new address? Tap Change IP and the server gets a new address in the same country. Need another country? Change the location right there, at no extra cost.

  • All your devices

Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone, iPad. There is no limit on the number of devices, including ULTRA.

  • Payment from Russia and support in Russian

Russian cards, SBP and cryptocurrency. In chat the Mia assistant answers around the clock; what it cannot settle goes to our support team, and their reply comes by email.

MeduzaVPN vs Amnezia VPN

Both give you a server of your own. The difference is who sets it up and how many ways to connect it has.

How to switch from Amnezia to MeduzaVPN

01

Pick a location and a plan

Order a VPN on the website or in the app — a personal server with ULTRA and the other protocols is created automatically.

02

Install the MeduzaVPN app

Sign in on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows or Linux: your servers and configurations load by themselves.

03

Connect

ULTRA is selected by default. Keep your Amnezia VPS as a backup or stop renting it.

Questions about Amnezia VPN and MeduzaVPN

What is Amnezia VPN?

A free, open-source app for running your own VPN: you rent a server from a hosting provider, the app installs a VPN on it, and you connect to your own server. The project's main protocol is AmneziaWG.

How is AmneziaWG different from WireGuard?

AmneziaWG is WireGuard with a changed packet format: extra packets are sent before the handshake, and headers and service-packet sizes are altered. Encryption and speed come from WireGuard.

What do AWG 1.5, 2.0, 3.1 and other versions mean?

They are generations of the AmneziaWG protocol, each changing the packet format. In practice the version number matters mostly for compatibility — client and server must support the same one. With MeduzaVPN you do not need to track it: we update the protocols on the server and in the apps.

Why is MeduzaVPN ULTRA better than AmneziaWG?

ULTRA is our own protocol rather than a modified WireGuard, built for a stable, fast connection. Just as important is what surrounds it: the personal server is created automatically, 13 protocols run on it at once, and you change the IP or location with a button in the app. We update the protocol and the apps ourselves — there are no versions to track.

Can I use MeduzaVPN instead of Amnezia VPN?

Yes. The idea is the same — a server for you alone on the PERSONAL plan — but the server is created for you, the protocols are already installed, and there are apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows and Linux. No VPS to rent or configure.

Does MeduzaVPN work in Russia?

Yes, customers in Russia use it every day. But no VPN can guarantee the same results on every network: networks differ by operator and region. That is why your server carries 13 protocols at once, and you can change the IP and location in the app.

Is Amnezia VPN free?

The app and the protocol are free, the server is not: the VPS is paid to the hosting provider, and installing and maintaining it costs your time. With MeduzaVPN the price includes the server, every protocol and their upkeep.

Is MeduzaVPN affiliated with the Amnezia project?

No. Amnezia is an independent open-source project; MeduzaVPN is a separate service with its own protocols and apps. We compare them on this page to make your choice easier.

MeduzaVPN instead of your own server

A personal server with ULTRA and 12 more protocols is ready right after payment — nothing to set up.
